International broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) has issued a statement condemning Mozambique's Interior Minister after journalists were attacked with tear gas during a press conference by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.
The episode, which took place on October 21 near the place where a member of Podemos and Mondlane's lawyer were murdered, left two journalists injured, according to the broadcaster's note.
In the statement signed by Peter Limbourg, DW's director-general, the broadcaster asked for security guarantees for its staff and for reporting to be carried out without intervention.
"It is unacceptable that journalists are attacked by police forces and face risks to their lives while carrying out their duties," Limbourg said, calling for respect for democratic norms and press freedom in Mozambique.
