The third and final day of demonstrations was once again marked by police violence

Terceiro e último dia de manifestações voltou a ser marcado pela violência policial

On Friday (29), Mozambique held the third and final day of the new round of protests called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane to contest the results of the October 9 general elections..

According to a RFIThe third and final day of demonstrations was once again marked by police violence in some areas of Maputo city. In the mounted brigade, the police shot at more than 500 demonstrators who were trying to reach the Junta transport terminal.

"Suddenly they're starting to shoot at us, the people, and they've hit someone who's here in the hospital [José Macamo General Hospital]. There are even two of them. We are fighting for our people, for our land, which is in bad shape," said one of the demonstrators quoted by the publication.

In the meantime, the people have erected barricades and transformed some of Maputo's avenues, such as 24 de Julho, into soccer fields and recreational parks.

"We are demanding the truth of the election, that the truth be spoken, we voted for Venâncio Mondlane," another protester claimed.

"So in order to change this country, you need to demonstrate peacefully, that's what we're doing," said another, claiming that organizing these soccer matches is "a basic demonstration".

For the young people on the streets, the protest has its justifications. "I'm here because I'm dissatisfied with what our government is doing. It's sad that a young graduate can't get a job to do what his future is, what his dreams are," said one young man.
