Bill to create sovereign wealth fund goes up for debate tomorrow

Proposta de lei para criação de fundo soberano vai ao debate amanhã

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Parliament will debate in general the bill to create a sovereign wealth fund in the country.

According to the parliament's press release, the rationale behind the proposal, which aims to ensure that gas revenues from the Rovuma basin are used to develop the country, will be presented to MPs by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Max Tonela.

The proposal will be debated in Parliament after Renamo challenged the proposal submitted by the government last week. Renamo argues that the fund should be managed by an autonomous entity, and not by the central bank.

The draft law was approved by the Council of Ministers in November 2022 and provides for the WSF to be capitalized in the first 15 years with 40% of gas and oil revenues, with 60% coming from the State Budget (OE).
