Public transport fares could be increased to 35 meticais

Preços dos transportes públicos podem ser agravados para 35 meticais

The carriers are threatening to increase the fares for public passenger transport if the Maputo Metropolitan Agency (AMT) does not pay the existing debts.

"They said there wasn't enough money to pay all the hauliers. What about those of us who haven't been paid and have cars working on the streets? We're going to have to raise prices if the money doesn't come through. It seems clear that the money won't come through," said one of the hauliers.

The hauliers' claim could come into force as early as January 20th.

"They've said they'll tell us something by January 20th. In the meantime we're going to plan our strategies. If they don't tell us something satisfactory, we'll opt for a price increase," said another haulier quoted by Success TV.

AMT is distancing itself from this, and says that it has paid almost all the debts for 2024. It only owes amounts for two months.

"As part of the government's commitment to FEMATRO, all payments are being made in coordination. By October, we had paid off the 15-seater semi-collectives. We've also paid off the debt from December 2022. We now have two months left and we think that this January we will pay the debt for January 2023 and we can finish in another month," said the AMT representative.

The hauliers say that the delays in compensation payments are jeopardizing their work, and the amounts have fallen short of expectations.
