Brazilian actress Léa Garcia, who appeared in famous productions such as 'Escrava Isaura' or 'O Clone', died on Tuesday at the age of 90.‘.
Confirmation of the death was given via the artist's official Instagram profile and, speaking to the website G1, the actress's son and manager, Marcelo Garcia, explained that his mother died following a heart attack. The artist was taken to hospital but did not survive.
According to Notícias ao Minuto, Léa Garcia had appeared in more than 100 productions, from cinema to theater and television, and her most notable roles were in 'Selva de Pedra', 'Escrava Isaura', 'Xica da Silva' and 'O Clone'.
The actress also won four 'Kikito' awards, which is the top prize awarded at the Gramado Festival, one of the most important and recognized awards in Brazilian cinema, with 'Filhas do Vento', 'Hoje tem Ragu' and 'Acalanto'.
Precisely on the day of her death, Léa Garcia was to be honored with the Oscarito Trophy at the Gramado Film Festival, which has already announced possible changes to the program.
"At the age of 90, the veteran had a CV of over a hundred productions, including film, theater and television. With a celebrated career in the arts, she was nominated for the best female actor award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1957 for her performance in the film 'Black Orpheus' which, in 1960, won the Oscar for best foreign film, representing France", reads a note from the festival.
The actress "was a key player in breaking down the barrier of characters traditionally intended for black actresses". "She has thus become a reference point for young actors and is admired for the quality of her performances," says the same press release.
Léa Garcia is still active and just this Monday she confirmed negotiations with TV Globo to act in the remake of the soap opera 'Renascer'.
