Mozambican citizens may be among the 39 workers trapped under the rubble of a building that was under construction and collapsed on Monday (07) in the coastal town of George, South Africa.
Mozambique's consular representation in South Africa says it has received information from an unofficial source about the presence of Mozambicans among the rubble.
Quoted today by Radio MozambiqueIvete Uqueio, the Mozambican consul in Cape Town, visited the scene of the incident and received official assurances that the nationalities would be disclosed.
"Until we were in the province, only South Africans and Malawians had been identified. However, as we are in contact with the leader of the Mozambican community in George, he referred us to the relatives of the victims and that's when we learned that there are Mozambicans buried at the site. We'll only be able to confirm these figures once the criminal investigation police have finished their work and provided us with the list," he said.
Rescue teams are working to pull the 39 workers from the rubble. By the early hours of today, 36 workers had already been rescued, including seven bodies. The incident occurred when 75 workers were on site.
