Renamo members and former guerrillas have been rioting since yesterday evening at the party's headquarters in Maputo and are demanding the resignation of the current Renamo leadership.
According to Renamo members and former guerrillas, the party's current leader, Ossufo Momade, and his squad should leave the leadership, pointing to the partridge's poor performance in the general and local elections as the cause.
"We thought it was a joke. In reality we saw that Ossufo wasn't voted in. That's why the party is down. So we here demand that he leave his post. We're never going to look for two or three people to lobby a person who doesn't speak, who is mute, because he won't be able to interact with those people, it has to be a person who speaks. He [Ossufo] doesn't speak, because for him just eating is everything," said Gustavo Vilankulo, a member of Renamo.
According to a publication in the newspaper "The Country" The repudiation began with a note sent to the party president's office, with a deadline of November 25 for a response.
In addition to the 26 demobilized Renamo members, the same group includes young people and women who are demanding the ouster of Ossufo Momade, the current president.
"In reading the current political situation, people were already saying that they didn't want him as a candidate," said Arone Levanhane.
Verónica Mondlane added that "my request is for this gentleman to leave, because since he's been here, we've never seen his position. Everything, even the DDR process, has gone down and we're here anyway. So what we want is for him to step aside, not from the party, from power, to leave the others".
The group of demonstrators also includes some of the former Renamo guerrillas covered by the DDR process. And one of them is the former spokesman for Mariano Nhongo, leader of the military junta, who died in October 2021.
"Ossufo Momade is ignorant, tribalist and regionalist. So we don't want to work with such a person, he has to resign and leave his post. The DDR process is a farce, there is nothing to it. We've been here since last year, but so far, there's no pension, there's nothing. And those who are getting pensions only have 1,200 and 1,300," said the former spokesman.
