Matola Municipal Council is carrying out a project to asphalt 24.5 kilometers of road in phases, but says it doesn't have the financial resources to build drainage ditches (hydraulic passageways) in all the sections covered by the project.
"Some sections, yes. Of course, it would be ideal if we could put in more of the road, if not all of it. But unfortunately, due to limited resources, we're going to build in places where it's indispensable.... where there are water lines that cross the road", said Firmino Guambe.
The road asphalting project in Matola comprises five sections that provide access to the Maputo ring road, including Nkobe-Matlhemele and Circular-Siduava.
In the meantime, he said that hydraulic crossings had already been built at other critical points, such as downtown Ngohloza, on the Muhalaze-Mukhatine stretch; downtown Siduava, coming off the ring road, including ditches on the stretch linking Matola-Gare to the ring road.
"We've already done this preliminary work of mapping out where we need to move the water crossing from one side to the other," he said.
Speaking in an interview with MiramarThe official said that the plan is to complete the asphalting of the Matola Gare-EN4 (Tchumene) section by the end of this month.
