Children are among the groups of citizens, such as young people, the elderly, the unemployed and state employees frustrated by the Single Wage Scale (TSU), who are most at risk of committing suicide as a result of gambling, while older people can also commit homicide against those close to them, psychologist Hachimo Chagane warned today.
According to the source, addiction to gambling has the same harmful effects as those caused by drugs, with the particularity that it only translates its damage at an abstract level (behavior, emotions and compulsive thoughts) as opposed to a physical or physiological one.
"There are vulnerable groups. The first, which is the largest in this case, is young people. They have a tendency to seek adrenaline, leisure and festivities, and also the tendency [greed] to be in the same line [have the 'same life'] as other young people. The other worrying group is children and the elderly in retirement," he said.
The country's current economic situation, which has been spreading for several years, could be the basis for the rise in this public health problem, he said in an interview with Radio Mozambique.
He explained that children are starting to enter the statistics due to the existence of games within their reach, such as 'Xindondi or xindondinha'.
"They [the children] are becoming associated with the world of gambling at a very young age, albeit at very low levels. But as they get older, they join the youth groups," he explained.

With regard to older people who are already retired, he said that they may take up gambling because their pension money no longer covers their financial needs.
"While you were working you had your income, but because you're retired you may see your pay cut," he noted.
He also said that the Covid-19 pandemic has reduced the labor force, leading many people to unemployment.
"It's believed that in times of economic crisis there are greater problems with gambling, precisely because people think that quick and easy money can solve their difficulties," he noted.
He also pointed out that the introduction of the TSU had brought with it problems for state employees, including frustration at seeing their expectations of receiving substantially improved salaries dashed.

"In the beginning, people fell into such high expectations that they took on debts beyond their capacity at the banks. They are also developing disorders of this nature. There must also be some of them who are joining these games of chance in order to recover what, eventually, the TSU is not bringing in," he said, warning that it is a national phenomenon that everyone needs to reflect on.

Likewise, the psychologist noted, frustrations with games of chance can serve as a motive for the occurrence or commission of homicides.
"Yes. Some people who have this tendency to suicide may commit murder of their family, because they don't want to go on that journey alone. They prefer, unfortunately, to kill their family, to think that the problem, the shame, will be solved," he said.
He suggested checking the weaknesses in Mozambican legislation regulating gambling in order to prevent it from being practiced outside the law and without the involvement of children. "And do this comparative study, seeing what other countries are doing," in regulatory terms.
