IMF warns that Mozambique could suffer economic slippage due to presidential elections this year

FMI alerta que Moçambique pode sofrer derrapagem económica devido às eleições presidência este ano

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warns that there is a high risk that the economies of 80 countries that have 2024 as an election year will collapse.

This group of nations on alert includes Mozambique, which is due to hold its 7th elections next October to choose the new President of the Republic, the constitution of parliament and the provincial leaderships. Meanwhile, the country is debating changing the date to coincide with the rainy season.

With the 2024 elections, around half of the population will go to the polls, and the IMF fears a slump due to the expenses associated with the events.

"We know what is happening, the pressure that exists to spend during electoral cycles," she said, quoted by the international press.

"Countries need to replenish their budget reserves and manage the debt that has accumulated," he warned, hoping that countries would be able to cope with the shocks of the pandemic.

The global economy was stronger than expected in 2023, which allowed states to make savings, but the IMF official said that the effort should continue while "the economy should experience a soft landing", after the peak in inflation seen in the last two years.

She pointed out that the debt of all countries has increased significantly; the difficulty of repayment; the cost of public debt. "For certain countries the debt problem is becoming dramatic."
