"I'm here, in the flesh, to make history," says Venâncio Mondlane on his arrival in Mozambique

“Estou aqui, em carne e osso para fazer história”, diz Venâncio Mondlane à sua chegada a Moçambique

"I'm here for Mozambique in the flesh... to make history," said presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane moments after arriving at Maputo International Airport.

Speaking to the press, he assured that his return was a unilateral decision aimed at pursuing his plans to fight for the country to the last consequences and that it was not the result of any political agreement. Mondlane accused the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, of never having met any of the conditions for his return.

"Regardless of all the risks associated with this situation, I want to fight within this country and I will go all the way," he said.

Essentially, as he explained, his arrival has three objectives: to break the narrative that the presidential dialogues were not attended by him because he was out of the country.

"You all know the constraints that led me to be out of the country. I had to break this narrative that I'm absent of my own volition from dialogue initiatives. So I'm here, in the flesh, to say if you want to come to the talks table, I'm here," he began.

Another reason is that their presence aims to witness, together with the people, all the "silent genocide" perpetrated by the regime of the day.

"I'm here to witness this, I'm here to monitor this process, to visit the mass graves, to cry out on behalf of the Mozambicans who are being murdered," he said.

On the other hand, he said that he intends to voluntarily present himself to the national justice system in view of the cases against him.

"I've come here to show that I'm willing to submit to justice, to defend myself before the courts and to prove to the courts who the real culprits are for the heinous crimes that have taken place to date," he said.
