The National Meteorological Institute (INAM) issued a statement yesterday informing of the evolution of a low pressure system in the southwest of the Indian Ocean.
According to the bulletin, the system has already become a tropical depression and has the potential to evolve into a tropical cyclone by January 11, near the east coast of Madagascar.
Projections indicate that the cyclone could enter the Mozambique Channel on January 12, bringing stormy winds that could affect maritime navigation in the region.
INAM also says that the system is very likely to approach the Mozambican coast on January 13, reaching the provinces of Nampula, Zambézia and Sofala.
If the forecast is confirmed, the tropical cyclone could cause intense rainfall, strong to very strong winds and severe thunderstorms, potentially generating significant damage to infrastructure, crops and homes, as well as putting lives at risk.
INAM is expected to issue regular updates on the phenomenon, and the next detailed forecast is scheduled for January 10
