White House confirms meeting between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping later this month

Casa Branca confirma encontro entre Joe Biden e Xi Jinping ainda este mês

US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, will meet later this November in San Francisco (USA), the White House confirmed yesterday.

Quoted by Lusa, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said that she hoped the meeting, the possibility of which had already been anticipated by the Chinese government, would be "constructive", following promises by the two leaders to try to re-establish relations between the United States and China.

Although Jean-Pierre didn't specify it, this meeting is expected to take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum, which takes place in mid-November in San Francisco.

Last week, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, met in Washington, in a meeting that was interpreted as preparation for this meeting at the highest level.

Biden and Xi made promises to seek to re-establish economic and diplomatic relations, after a long process of disagreements and incidents that began with the "economic war" declared on China by former US President Donald Trump in 2016.
