The Center for Public Integrity (CIP) says that there will be more census teams in areas belonging to Frelimo, the ruling party, than in opposition areas, making the process more difficult.
"The CNE has already published the placement of the registration brigades. Once again, there will be more teams in the Frelimo areas than in the Renamo areas, making it more difficult for Renamo voters to register. Let's look at the provinces with a similar population density," says CIP in its bulletin on the political process in Mozambique.
"Nampula and Maputo province have a similar population density, but in Nampula each brigade must try to register 4,214 people, while in Maputo province each brigade has only 2,717 potential voters," says CIP.
"Niassa and Gaza are similar provinces, with low population density. But in Niassa the teams must try to register 3,493 people, while in Gaza they are targeting less than half of that, 1,507 potential voters," says CIP.
"The census begins on March 15th. But in the north of the country, the heavy rains continue and there is still flooding, according to the Ministry of Public Works in its daily report on the floods. Many dirt roads will be impassable for several weeks, which will delay the census in rural areas," warns the NGO.
Mozambique is holding its seventh general elections on October 9, which include presidential, legislative and provincial elections. The National Electoral Commission (CNE) has set up 9,165 registration posts for the general elections, 391 of which are abroad
