HCB seeks new energy sources

The Executive Director of Hidroeléctrica de Cahora-Bassa (HCB), Moisés Machava, said that the company is conducting studies to identify new investment opportunities in the generation, transport and commercialization of clean energy.

The official was speaking during the Energy and Industry Summit held in Maputo last week (June 22-23).

HCB's purpose is to install photovoltaic plants at various points on the Cabora Bassa reservoir, where their efficiency can be increased through the cooling provided by the water in the dam.

The same plan also foresees the construction of wind power plants, mini and medium pumped hydroelectric plants, this being another of the technically and economically feasible opportunities.

That feasibility study is being conducted with the support of a consulting firm, whose name has not been disclosed. The results of the study will be released later this year as progress is made.

HCB was committed to maintaining its current power generation system and keeping all the components associated with power generation and transmission robust, but at the same time, "we think that in the future, from a short, medium and long-term perspective, we should participate in the development of new clean energy sources."
