Empresa Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has already managed to mobilize around 300 million dollars for the implementation of the Energy for All Program (ProEnergia), an initiative that foresees the addition of more than 320 thousand new connections to the national grid per year until 2024, reports Jornal Notícia.  

According to the source, the funding comes from a contribution from the World Bank and the governments of Norway and Switzerland. The executive director of EDM, Joaquim Ou-chim, said a few days ago that the second phase will start soon.

"At this moment the procuremment is underway, through which we intend to select the contractor and find a company that will be responsible for guaranteeing the supply of the electrical material," he mentioned quoted by Notícias.

According to him, EDM expects to start the works as soon as the selection processes of the companies are completed, since the program does not foresee any discontinuity in the connection of new consumers in order to meet the goal of guaranteeing universal energy access in 2030.

"The program aims to guarantee universal access, both on and off the national power grid. It is being implemented throughout the country," he stressed.

He also explained that the first phase, which ends in three months, has allowed the connection of many families living in the vicinity of the network.

"In this second phase we will continue to intensify connections, but also with a focus on expanding the network," he stressed.

Currently the rate of access to energy in the country is about 39 percent on the grid. In the first phase of the implementation of the Energy for All Program, about US$270 million were invested, benefiting, so far, about 307,000 on-grid families and a little over 3,000 off-grid families.
