The Directorate of the Maputo Preventive Prison (Cadeia Civil) prevented the release of two citizens implicated in the case of embezzlement of about 18.6 million dollars after the Judicial Court of Maputo City ordered on Friday the release of eight citizens in the same case by order of Judge Eusébio Lucas.

One of those two indictees had already been released days earlier, but the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) went to put him back in his cells.

Says a national portal that refusal to a court order, issued by an investigating judge, is illegal. In this case, the Court may issue a second warrant that must be complied with, and "this could happen even today".

According to the source, senior Mozambican Customs officials, customs brokers, and businessmen participated in this scheme, importing various goods and merchandise without paying the proper charges.

The defendants, whose identities remain secret, participated in the detour of $18.6 million from the Maputo International Maritime Terminal.

Following the arrests, several properties, luxury vehicles and valuables were also seized.
