Mozambique may benefit from humanitarian aid from the United Nations Organization, through its Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), estimated at around 388.5 million dollars next year, according to the "Global Humanitarian Overview" report, released Thursday in Geneva.
This year, OCHA's Humanitarian Response Plan for Mozambique covered 1,200,000 people, and if the appeals are funded by the international community, the number of beneficiaries should be maintained in 2022.
It should be noted, however, that the OCHA plan aimed to assist one million people, a goal that was exceeded, with only $161.5 million (64%) of the required $254 million in funding.
"In northern Mozambique, humanitarian organizations have significantly increased their response, enabling partners to provide life-saving and life-sustaining assistance to 1.23 million people at risk - more than double the number reached in 2020″, the report reads.
Estimates by the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs for next year are that some 274 million people around the world will need humanitarian aid or protection, the highest number ever.
The humanitarian aid to the 183 million people in the most serious situations, in 63 countries, will cost $41 billion, OCHA further emphasizes.
In addition to Mozambique, the funds will be directed to assist 27 million people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 24.4 million people in Afghanistan, 25.9 million in Ethiopia, 20.7 million in Yemen, and 20.1 million in Syria, as well as 7.7 million people in Colombia and 4.5 million in Venezuela, among other vulnerable groups.
This year, OCHA helped 107 million people, in projects carried out with the help of non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and governments.
