Fuel price hike was to avoid collapse, says Max Tonela

The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, said, this Monday, that the Government decided to increase the price of fuel to continue to have supply, since importers and distributors in the sector were operating at a loss.

"The level of losses was so high that some of the companies were getting into debt with the bank, to make imports, without the capacity to make the replacement," revealed Tonela, during the sixth coordinating council of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, in Pemba (Cabo Delgado).

The minister said that the change was necessary to ensure continuity of supply, security and replenishment of reserves, and all work took into account the current international oil crisis.

On the other hand, the minister asserted that the Government continues to subsidize the price of cooking gas, paying 12 meticais per kilogram.

Recall that the new fuel prices went into effect last Thursday (22), after the Energy Regulatory Authority announced the increase from 7% to 22% the day before as a result of the rise in the barrel of crude oil, which was around $85 per barrel.
