Verónica Macamo says climate change and terrorism compromise agriculture

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, says that climate change and armed conflicts are factors that condition the agenda of eliminating hunger in African countries.

Speaking yesterday at the end of the thirty-sixth Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, Verónica Macamo cited our country as an example, having reaffirmed that in some areas it is not possible to produce food due to the actions of terrorist groups.

On the other hand, at a time when Mozambique was hoping for a productive agricultural campaign, most of the crops were washed away by the force of the waters resulting from the heavy rain, coupled with the rising flows in the river basins.

And in order to end poverty, African governments must work on research, looking for mechanisms to increase production and reduce malnutrition rates amid the challenges of climate change and conflict in Africa.

This is the opinion of the African Union's Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, the Blue Economy and the Environment, Josefa Sakco.

Lasting two days, the African Union summit ended yesterday, on a day when Mozambique made its statement in which it reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, national reconciliation and the deepening of democracy. (RM)
