Venâncio Mondlane will submit his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic on Thursday (06), for the elections to be held on October 9.
The information is contained in a document from the Constitutional Council - where the candidacy will be submitted - in response to a request for Mondlane's candidacy to be delivered and received on Wednesday (05).
Until now, it has been unknown who is supporting Mondlane's candidacy. Recently, on the sidelines of the Renamo National Congress - which he was prevented from attending - in Alto Mulócuè, Zambézia, he said he had received proposals from 21 political parties and civil society organizations to head a candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic.
Last week, Raul Novinte, the former mayor of Nacala in Nampula province, said that a party would soon be announced which he would join alongside Venâncio Mondlane.
Novinte became the former mayor of Nacala and will run in 2019 as a member of Renamo. Last year he lost the elections.
Mondlane is a resigned member of the Renamo party, having submitted documents announcing his departure from the party, as well as revoking his position as a member of parliament representing Renamo.
Last year, Venâncio Mondlane ran for mayor of Maputo. Official results, widely contested, gave victory to his Frelimo opponent.
