On Saturday, politician Venâncio Mondlane announced that there would be peaceful protests and demonstrations on the days of the swearing-in of the deputies of the Assembly of the Republic (AR) and the investiture of Daniel Chapo as President of the Republic of Mozambique (PR).
The deputies of the RA are due to be sworn in on Monday (13) and Chapo on Wednesday, 15, in Maputo city. The ceremony for the new parliamentarians will take place in the HR and for the PR, in Independence Square.
Mondlane wants his supporters to take to the streets for three days in protest against what he sees as maneuvers to take stolen and negotiated votes.
"Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are the days we have to declare a national strike. We have to paralyze all activities on those three days. On Monday we have to raise our banners wherever we are, to demonstrate against the traitors of the people. On Wednesday, the 15th, it will be against the thieves of the people," he announced, limiting them to between 8:00 and 17:00. "That's enough."
Mondlane called the boycotts from Maputo, after two and a half months "in an uncertain place" abroad.
He stressed that the protests must be peaceful, without destroying private or public infrastructure, and without attacking "our brothers and sisters".
According to Mondlane, these days will be opportune to "truly see which president the people voted for".
"These three days are days of seriously deciding what we want in our lives. These three days are crucial for our lives. We have to show that the people are in charge," he said.
