On Wednesday night, the independent presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, signed a memorandum with the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS) - FRELIMO dissidents - to support his presidential candidacy in the seventh general elections on October 9.
It was up to the president of the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD), Manecas Daniel, to explain the guidelines of the agreement. He alluded to strategies to keep CAD out of the electoral races, but without much effect. As a result, this time there will be "the most difficult elections in Mozambique's history".
"We think there is a political force that could hold the bar. We're going to pass the baton to PODEMOS," he announced.
For his part, the president of PODEMOS, Albino Forquilha, said that he had received the testimony of the CAD, with a high degree of responsibility to carry out the mission.
"We want a different kind of governance for the country," he said, noting that we also want a stable parliament, capable of guaranteeing the principles of governance.
"This is the beginning of a new era, but it doesn't mean that CAD will be forgotten. It means that the baton is now transferred to PODEMOS. But we will do everything together: we will devise a campaign plan together. This agreement represents an alliance for the next elections and the next legislature. Podemos will take on legislative responsibility in parliament and I will do my presidential battle," said Venâncio Mondlane.
