Health units without antiretrovirals

Unidades sanitárias sem anti-retrovirais

There is a shortage of antiretrovirals in several hospitals across the country, a situation that has compromised the treatment of people with HIV and other associated complications.

"Notícias" writes, quoting the Citizen Observatory for Health (OCS), that the situation had already been reported in the first quarter of the year, but continues to occur in a considerable number of health facilities.

Investigations into the number of health units without antiretrovirals are currently underway, said Rogério Simango, coordinator of the Public Financing and Expenditure Pillar and a researcher at the organization. In the meantime, "what we have found is that a significant number of health units are out of stock of medicines, especially anti-retrovirals," he said, quoted by the newspaper.

The source believes that the difficulty may be related to the dependence on external support, since there has been a delay in the allocation of aid.

Data from the latest survey by the National Health Institute (INS) indicates that Mozambique continues to have the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world.

The lack of medication in most health facilities can contribute in some way to treatment abandonment, contributing to greater exposure of people living with HIV.
