Mozambique has strengthened security at "all airports" in the face of action by armed groups in Cabo Delgado and in line with international requirements, a source from the Mozambican Civil Aviation Institute (IACM) told Lusa.
"For sure there is reinforcement, the Defense and Security Forces have reinforced the measures in all the airports, that exists," said IACM President João de Abreu, in response to a concrete question about the influence the insurgency in the north has on the rest of the country.
Abreu assured that the Mozambican airports are safe from any threat of attack and operate within security standards certified by competent international entities.
"Every airport in the country complies. The Defense and Security Forces are on standby," he declared.
In matters of airport security, he continued, "there is no bargaining" and the authorities cannot be "permissive."
The president of the IACM advanced that beyond what the insurgents' action in Cabo Delgado implies, all airports are required to follow security recommendations issued by international aviation authorities.
"We again call the airports to account for compliance, this is not a country-specific case, these are measures applied in every country in the world," he emphasized.
About the fact that the Beira International Airport, in the central province of Sofala, announced on Monday the reinforcement of security measures, João de Abreu said that the information is related to the renewal process of the international certificate that that infrastructure has triggered.
"Beira International Airport is in the process of renewing its certification and one of the requirements is compliance with security measures. You can't certify anyone without compliance with security measures," he stressed.
