Death toll from Cyclone Gombe in Nampula rises to 11

The number of deaths as a result of the passage of Tropical Cyclone Gombe in the province of Nampula has risen to 11. The latest case happened in the district of Monapo, where in the early hours of Saturday a body of an elderly woman was found under a wall.

The preliminary figures were shared this Saturday by the governor of Nampula, Manuel Rodrigues, who added that the deaths were registered in the districts of Monapo, Angoche, Nampula and Ilha de Moçambique.

Meanwhile, this Saturday two committees of the Secretary of State of Nampula and the Governor who went to the field to assess the damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Gombe failed to reach the district of Mogincual.

Both from Nampula city, either through Liúpo or Monapo, it is not possible to reach the district of Mogincual due to communication breakdown.

This situation, left the governor of Nampula very upset, because the activities are totally paralyzed.

Meanwhile, multisectoral teams have been sent from this Saturday to all twenty-three districts of the province to survey the damage caused by tropical storm Gombe that battered the province this Friday.

In addition to these teams, others headed by central and provincial level leaders are climbing some districts to gauge the level of the phenomenon's impact.

The President of INGD, Luísa Meque is working in the district of Liúpo and then Angoche, the governor of Nampula, Manuel Rodrigues in the district of Mogincual.

This Saturday, the Secretary of State visited the Central Hospital of Nampula, where besides being informed about the level of readiness of that health unit, to respond to situations of disease resulting from the passage of GOMBE, he visited some injured people as a result of collapsed houses and walls.

Mety Gondola said that at the moment the situation in the districts affected by the cyclone is worrying, judging by the level of destruction of infrastructure.

However, there is no communication between the districts of Liúpo and Mogincual, due to the destruction of a pontoon by the rains.

The delegation of the governor of Nampula, Manuel Rodrigues, that was going to the district of Mogincual, using the Liúpo road, was forced to return, using the road from Monapo, according to the leader.

Despite the improved weather conditions since early this morning, after the passage of Tropical Cyclone Gombe, some districts in the province of Nampula affected by the storm without telephone communication and electricity.
