Mozambican civil society wants the head of state, Daniel Chapo, to publicly declare his assets. The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) is one of the organizations making this demand, not only of Daniel Chapo, but also of his entire team.
In a publication by DWAndré Mulungo, from the CDD, explained that "experience in Mozambique shows that people who take on a certain public position enter in one situation and leave in another. "Obviously there is an evolution in that person's assets," he said.
For the CDD, the fact that Chapo, who was once governor of Inhambane, does not have a dirty past in terms of "corruption", should be a factor that the President of the Republic should be able to take advantage of.
"It's important that President Chapo (...) breaks with this sinister past [of the previous government]. And the only way to break it is to publicly present all his assets, his ministers and secretaries of state. And that his mandate is monitored so that, in the end, he can tell us what he has," the CDD activist stressed.
From his inauguration speech to the others he has given on various occasions, Daniel Chapo has promised to fight corruption hard.
