Samora Machel Júnior advances with his pre-candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic

Samora Machel Júnior avança com sua pré-candidatura à Presidência da República

The son of Mozambique's first President will present his pre-candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic at the Frelimo Central Committee meeting on April 5 and 6.

Samora Machel Junior is the son of the country's first post-independence president, the charismatic Samora Machel, who died in 1986.

The country's general elections are scheduled for October 4 and it is now certain that the current president and leader of Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, has ruled out any possibility of revising the Constitution in order to remain in power.

Although next weekend's meeting of the Frelimo Central Committee will not officially discuss the party's candidate for the country's leadership, according to the Negócios newspaperSamora Machel Júnior will force the issue by presenting his pre-candidacy.

However, this dragging out of the process is seen as a way of delaying a choice: José Pacheco, Eduardo Mulembwe, Alberto Vaquina, Luísa Diogo, Aires Aly and Basílio Monteiro have all been named as potential candidates.

Samora Machel Júnior, in a document published yesterday (02) by the weekly Savana, states that his "candidacy is based on the principles of the search for peace, respect for diversity and difference, the promotion of inclusion and equality, human dignity" and aims to "ensure Mozambique's economic growth" by guaranteeing "an environment conducive to development" in the country.

"My candidacy is a mixture of concerns but also of hope, aimed at providing answers to the problems and desires of Mozambicans," he said.
