The Supreme Court says that the statements made by Denise Catarina, Director of Documentation, Legal Edition and Library of the Supreme Court, do not reflect the position of that sovereign body, maintaining that its actions are guided by the principles of independence and impartiality..
The Supreme Court's position comes after Denise Catarina questioned, through a video, the legality of the Constitutional Council's decision to validate and proclaim the election results of October 9, publicly declaring her support for a political party and a presidential candidate she considers to be the winner of the elections.
"The Supreme Court respects constitutional mandates and other state bodies, such as the Assembly of the Republic and the Constitutional Council. The courts, by their nature, as bodies for settling disputes, including in electoral matters, must be equidistant from political issues in the light of article 37 of the Statute of Judicial Magistrates, approved by Law no. 7/2009," reads a note released by the body.
Further on, the Supreme Court stresses that it distances itself from Denise Catarina's statements, pointing out that "appropriate measures will be taken to preserve the image of the institution".
