The value of the gold reserves held by the Bank of Mozambique fell by almost 4% in 2022, to around 230 million dollars, according to central bank data compiled today by Lusa.
According to an annual report by the Bank of Mozambique, the country's gold reserves - in coins and bars - stood at approximately 230.3 million dollars on December 31, 2022, equivalent to 126,575 ounces (3,588 kilograms), "based on the average price of gold quoted in US dollars on the reporting date on the London gold market".
On December 31, 2021, the value of these reserves, then 126,530 ounces (3,587 kilograms), was 239.7 million dollars, thus translating into a devaluation of 9.3 million dollars in the valuation of these assets.
According to the international gold price, each ounce was worth 1,992 dollars last May, compared to 1,797 dollars in December 2022 and 1,790 dollars a year earlier.
According to this month's data from the World Gold Council, consulted today by Lusa, Portugal is the 15th country with the world's largest gold reserves (382.6 tonnes).
Portugal is also the leader among Portuguese-speaking countries, followed by Brazil, with 129.7 tons (31st in the world), Mozambique, then with 3.9 tons (88th), while Cape Verde, outside the World Gold Council's top 100 countries with gold reserves, had around one ton in those reserves at the end of 2022.
