Renamo proposes annulment of October 9 elections and creation of caretaker government

Renamo propõe anulação das eleições de 9 de Outubro e a criação Governo de gestão

Renamo proposes the annulment of the October 9 general elections, the holding of new elections, the adoption of a government to manage public institutions and the dissolution of the current electoral management model.

Ossufo Momade, president of the political grouping, explained that the elections should be annulled because there is evidence that they were fraudulent.

"We have come to ask for the immediate annulment of this electoral process. In the eyes of everyone and the international community, we are unanimous in saying that it did not reflect the legitimate will of the people," he said.

Evidence of fraud includes ballot box stuffing, falsification of notices and results, tabulation without the presence of candidate delegates due to their arrest for belonging to the opposition, deaths caused by the police, persecution of opponents, deprivation of the right to demonstrate and to the internet.

Speaking at a press conference in Maputo city, he explained that his interest in Renamo is linked to the need to respect ethics, justice and equality.

"The annulment of this election does not mean delegitimizing the voice of the people, but ensures that this voice is heard clearly and unquestionably," he said.

Renamo urges the competent institutions to analyze the evidence of fraud impartially, "and have the courage to take the best decision that serves the interests of truth and justice".

On the other hand, the party proposes the creation of a caretaker government which, for two years, will ensure the functioning of state institutions. During this period, according to Momade, the country will be preparing for free, fair and transparent elections.

For the party, only in this way will the institutions of justice and electoral administration be able to regain the credibility of Mozambicans, and social stability can be restored. But for this to happen, the party believes that the current electoral management model must be dissolved.

"Renamo proposes the creation of a caretaker government that will ensure the full functioning of the institutions while we prepare for free, fair and transparent elections. Renamo is in favor of dissolving the current electoral management model, the electoral bodies, because it has been proven that they are the ideological and moral authors of the current post-election instability," he said.

In any case, the party still lacks a project to put on the table if the proposals are accepted.

"For a period of two years, Renamo invites society, academics, all national cooperation partners and international organizations to contribute so that we have a good electoral management model that conveys confidence to Mozambicans," he said.
