The Renamo party began the announced general demonstration with the presence of three party members together in the same square in the country's capital.
The party's president, Ossufo Momade, the frontrunners, Venâncio Mondlane (Maputo city), and Manuel de Araújo (Quelimane city), were in Praça dos Combatentes (Xiquelene) this morning.
Momade and Mondlane were expected to attend the meeting, but surprisingly, Manuel de Araújo appeared from the protocol car where these two figures were.
On Monday, during a speech in the city of Quelimane, D'Araújo announced his trip to the country's capital to talk to ambassadors from some European countries, in order to appeal for their intervention as mediators in the current electoral conflicts.
On the same day, the US embassy in Mozambique issued a statement saying that there were some credible reports of electoral malpractice in the October 11 local elections.
"...there are many credible reports of irregularities on polling day and during the vote tabulation process," the document reads.
According to the electoral authorities, the Renamo party did not win any municipalities. Frelimo won 64, and MDM one municipality. Elections were held in 65 municipalities.
Ossufo Momade called the strike on Sunday after an extraordinary party meeting. So far, thousands of people have marched through the streets of Maputo.
Renamo members say they will continue the fight until the last extrajudicial consequences. "There are people willing to give blood".
