Renamo President Ossufo Momade has accused Frelimo of having a plan up its sleeve to assassinate members of Mozambique's largest opposition party. Momade is threatening to paralyze the country if the 'annihilatory' plan is carried out.

"I'm leaving a big message here: if this is the Frelimo party's intention, and if one of Renamo's members is killed, we will bring this country to a halt because we have this strength," he said, speaking to the press on Saturday.

Last week, the mayor of the city of Nampula for the Renamo party, Paulo Vahanle, denounced an assassination attempt that was allegedly carried out by an agent of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), assigned to the High Individuals Protection Unit.

Reacting to the case in Nampula, Ossufo Momade regretted what had happened and said that peace in the country was under threat.

"We regret this project by the Frelimo party. Since we started our activities, in all our rallies, we have revealed that Frelimo has a project to try to annihilate some members [of Renamo], and one of the days is the 11th. Peace is threatened because when one Mozambican is threatened, it's a threat to the whole country," he said.

The President of Renamo said that the PRM spokesman in Nampula's justifications that the plainclothes officer was on duty to protect the mayor were false, given that the Vahanle guardhouse was unaware of his deployment.

"It was a farce, because if someone shows up to protect me, I have to know about it, especially since he was in plain clothes," he said, recalling that a similar act happened to him in Chimoio, the capital of Manica. "Our guards found out and immediately disarmed him. The same thing happened in Nampula."

He also said that the Nampula case that has now been revealed is not the only one, and that Frelimo is committed to taking down Renamo members.

"We have some list leaders who are receiving anonymous phone calls. This is a Frelimo project, and they know very well that they won't be able to get through. Their only alternative is to shoot each one," he said.
