The works for the implementation of the rapid transit system (BRT) for public transport of passengers in the metropolitan area of greater Maputo, should start in September next year, assures the Municipal Council of Maputo.
This is an old project, and construction was supposed to have started in 2014, but for unclear reasons, it did not start.
The project theoretically envisages the construction of exclusive lanes for articulated public transport buses to improve mobility. The execution of the project is budgeted at $250 million, financed by the World Bank.
The councilman for Mobility, Transport and Traffic in the Municipality of Maputo, José Nichols, revealed to Notícias that a corridor has already been identified that will connect the Workers Square, in Baixa, to the Matola-Gare terminal, in the municipality of Matola, in which dedicated transport routes will be introduced.
The leader indicated that the operation of the BRT will allow the transportation of 104,000 people quickly every day.
According to the source, in addition to the construction of corridors, stops and their terminals, the training of municipal employees involved in the project is planned.
