The National Statistics Institute (INE) says that in September, the prices of basic goods and services grew by 2.75%, compared to the same period in 2023.

According to INE data since September, citizens in Quelimane, Beira and Maputo, for example, have had to spend more money to buy the same amount of products, which cost less in the same period last year.

Soap powder, for example, which used to cost 230 meticais, now sells for between 250 and 270 meticais. Cooking oil, which used to cost 550 meticais per 5 liters, has now risen to 590 meticais. And a carton of eggs has gone from 1,700 to 1,950.

The INE speaks of a price increase of around 5.29%, with the food and non-alcoholic beverages division recording the highest price increase.

According to the source, the city of Quelimane saw the biggest rise in prices, with around 3.95%, followed by Xai-Xai with 3.18%. The city of Beira increased by 3.14%, the city of Maputo by 2.32% and Chimoio by 2.28%.
