The first shipment of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Mozambique operated by British Petroleum (BP) arrived in Spain on Wednesday, after leaving from Coral Sul, in Cabo Delgado, almost a month ago.
According to tracking data, the ship carrying 173,400m3 anchored in Bilbao, at the Bilbao Anchorage. The journey lasted 24 days and six hours.
The tanker is carrying Mozambique's first LNG export under a long-term sales contract with British giant BP. The LNG was produced in Rovuma, Mozambique, by the Coral Sul FLNG Project.
The reserve explored by BP is one of the most valuable in sub-Saharan Africa. The start of exports is seen in many quarters as an escape route for Mozambique's economic progress.
The Russian-Ukrainian war has reignited Europe's appetite for African oil and gas. However, the UK is being forced by campaigners to abandon the project in Mozambique in the name of the climate. There is already a case before the Court of Appeal challenging the British government's decision to approve 1.15 billion dollars for the Coral Sul-FLNG project in Mozambique.
