President of the Republic urges more investment in women's training

Presidente da República defende urgência de mais investimento na formação das mulheres

In Maputo, the President of the Republic defended the urgent need for more investment in women's training to promote gender equality..

Speaking on Wednesday at the opening of the Seventh National Conference on Women and Gender, with the theme Empowering Women to Achieve Gender Equality, Filipe Nyusi pointed out that the country still has "gaps" in this area of investment.

"It is therefore urgent that more and more women are trained and empowered so that they acquire skills that allow them to make free, responsible and informed choices," said Filipe Nyusi, quoted by Lusa, adding that "women must be trained with skills that also allow them to access productive resources, on an equal footing with men".

Nyusi went on to reiterate that female workers in the labor market are excluded from quality jobs, earn little and are placed in a less productive position.

The President of the Republic called on the country to reflect on the factors that keep many girls out of school, the prevalence of violence and discrimination against women and exclusion from access to land and the economy.

"That priority actions be defined in the political, economic, social, cultural and citizenship fields" aimed at further progress in reducing the imbalances between women and men.

Despite acknowledging the persistence of challenges in the gender balance, Filipe Nyusi emphasized that it is not "propaganda" that Mozambique is one of the few countries in the world where the number of women in government equals that of men.

The country has also made a lot of progress in parliamentary representation, and now has more than 30% female deputies in the Assembly of the Republic - with 250 seats, Nyusi emphasized.
