Port of Nacala may be one of the most modern ports in sub-Saharan Africa

The rehabilitation works at the Port of Nacala, in the province of Nampula, may transform this infrastructure into one of the most modern in Sub-Saharan Africa.

With an overall investment of about 277.5 million US dollars, disbursed by the Japan Development Agency (JICA), the work should be completed by April next year.

With three terminals, general and bulk cargo, liquids and containers, the deep-water port of Nacala has seen an increasing trend in volumes handled, reaching 2.8 million tons last year.

With the ongoing rehabilitation, it is intended that cargo handling capacity will increase from 100,000 20-foot containers per year to 250,000, with storage rising from five thousand to eight thousand.

The capacity to receive large ships will increase from 60 thousand to 80 thousand tons, in addition to the maximum capacity of the pier equipment, which will be able to handle 50 containers/hour. (News)
