The Constitutional Council will today invest Daniel Francisco Chapo as the 5th President of the Republic of Mozambique, in the midst of a political crisis that has claimed the lives of hundreds of Mozambicans.
The political and social situation is having repercussions around the world, and the scenario in Mozambique has led most of the countries invited to the investiture ceremony at the highest level to send representatives of their presidents. However, only two heads of state will be able to witness the ceremony.
According to Edelvina Materula, the vice-president of the Interministerial Commission for Major National and International Events, the presidents of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, will attend Chapo's inauguration.
For the rest of the diplomatic corps, only representatives such as vice-presidents, ministers and deputy ministers.
Tanzania, Malawi and Kenya sent vice-presidents; e-Suatini and Rwanda sent their prime ministers; Angola, Algeria, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, India, Portugal and Zimbabwe sent ministers; Egypt sent a deputy minister; Uganda sent a defense general.
Several other national and international organizations are expected to attend the event, with around 2,500 guests expected.
Guests began arriving at the event venue, Independence Square in downtown Maputo, this morning.
