British Prime Minister and outgoing Commonwealth President Boris Johnson pledges to invest more than 370 million pounds (about 29 billion meticals) this year to strengthen global food security, including 130 million (10.1 billion) for the World Food Programme (WFP).
Johnson also said he supports the United Nations plan to recover the grain currently held in Ukraine. The British head of government was speaking on Friday in Kigali, Rwanda, at the opening of the 26th Commonwealth Heads of State and Government Summit, in which Mozambique participates with a delegation headed by the Prime Minister, Adriano Maleiane.
Johnson stressed that the Commonwealth is an organization that united can defend the world from injustice. According to the British Prime Minister, "if anyone doubts the Commonwealth's ability to speak with one voice," one need only recall that it was in 2020 that the UK issued the first Joint Declaration of all 54 members of the organization before the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The summit was officially opened by Paul Kagame, President of the host country and new helmsman of the organization for the next two years. Kagame asked the members to focus on the challenges facing the people of the organization's member countries whose lives have been blighted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Charles Prince of Wales, representing Queen Elizabeth II; Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland; Heads of State and representatives and leaders from 53 countries, invited guests, including the Emir of Qatar, specially invited by President Kagame.
