The spokesman for the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) said today that the payment of teachers' overtime is already a matter for the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).
"It's our concern. We manage the teachers. The Education sector is concerned about paying overtime to teachers. But the MEF has done some work to verify the hours in schools," said Manuel Simbine.
In an interview with STVHe clarified that it is only MINEDH's responsibility to pass on the information it receives from MEF to teachers.
"What we pass on as the Ministry of Education are the guarantees and information we receive from the Ministry of Finance," he said.
He therefore assured that some teachers have already received their arrears, as announced last year by the head of MINEDH, Carmelita Namashulua. However, there may be teachers in these schools who haven't actually been paid. "The ones who are marching".
"There are schools that have been paid. What we can say is that payment is being made in stages," he said, claiming a guarantee from the MEF.
"The verification was carried out by the MEF and not the MINEDH. We've received reports indicating which schools have been verified, and the process is still ongoing," he said, expressing his desire to know from the National Teachers' Association (ANAPRO) how many associate teachers have already received and are yet to receive the overtime owed.
An ANAPRO document submitted to MEF and verified by MZNews clarifies that MEF teams have boycotted tripartite meetings between ANAPRO, MINEDH and MEF to clarify the salary situation.
This Wednesday (03.01), some teachers' associations, including their president, marched down some avenues in the city of Matola in protest against the stance of MINEDH and MEF, and threatened to boycott the start of the 2024 school year.
