UK GDP recovers 0.5% in October

PIB do Reino Unido recupera 0,5% em Outubro

British gross domestic product (GDP) recovered by 0.5% in October, after a particularly sharp decline in the previous month, the UK's statistics office announced today.

The good performance of British retail trade made the biggest contribution to GDP growth, with an increase of 1.9% in October, said the British Office for National Statistics (ONS) quoted by Lusa.

The services sector also advanced by 0.6%, while the industrial sector's performance remained stable, after an increase of 0.2% in September.

The construction sector increased by 0.8% in October, the fourth consecutive monthly increase.

ONS statistics director Darren Morgan noted that construction has continued its strong upward trend this year, mainly due to new housing starts.

In November, British Economy Minister Jeremy Hunt indicated that the UK had already entered a recession, given that in the third quarter of the year, British GDP contracted by 0.2%.
