Payroll burden to fall by 12% in 2024

Peso da folha salarial vai reduzir 12% em 2024

The civil service wage bill could fall next year from 14.5 to 12%, compared to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), said the Minister of Economy and Finance, Max Tonela.

According to the minister, who was speaking at a government hearing requested by the Assembly of the Republic's Planning and Budget Committee, the reduction aims to allow for a better balance in spending and an increase in the volume of state investment.

This reduction will also be made with a view to gradually adjusting the national wage bill to the standard for the Southern African region, which is set at 8%.

At the same time, Tonela adds, the policy of restricted hiring will continue, in order to impose a budgetary trend with more sustainable salaries.

According to PESOE's proposal, it is intended that at least 191.7 billion meticais will be earmarked for the payment of salaries and wages by 2024.
