Yesterday, the Assembly of the Republic approved the proposal to revise the statute for judicial magistrates, with the aim of updating and adjusting the management and discipline of these professionals to current requirements.
The occasional revision of the judges' statute aims to ensure greater prestige for judicial magistrates, reinforcing the importance and dignity of the function in the Mozambican judicial system.
This review comes just a few days before a general strike called by the Mozambican Association of Judges (AMJ), starting on Friday (09), due to the government's failure to respond to the class' demands.
Supporting the approval of this revision, the Minister for the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Lídia Cardoso, explained that the document will also clarify the procedures for electing members of the judiciary, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency in the process.
Quoted by Radio MozambiqueLídia Cardoso added that the implementation of these changes will not entail any additional costs for the state.
Since 2022, Mozambican judges have been complaining about an alleged downgrading of their status and flaws in the application of the new salary scale (TSU), which has been strongly contested by other professional classes, such as doctors and teachers, who have even called strikes in protest at salary delays and cuts.
