Mozambique's National Communications Institute (INCM) and mobile phone operators announced yesterday that they will be launching specific packages for young people aged between 16 and 25. The measure comes after intense social protest over the new mobile phone tariffs approved by the regulator.
These are promotional packages with discounts of 0.03 meticais per MegaByte (MB), which means that with 15 meticais you can have 500 MB and 30 meticais for 1 GigaByte (GB).
According to Massingue Apala, executive administrator for the Market Regulation and Statistics area at the INCM, this consultation is taking place in the face of society's concerns about Internet access, especially among young people, students and entrepreneurs who use communications as a source of income.
Speaking on behalf of the mobile phone networks, Adil Gi-na-bay stressed that the date of implementation of the new tariffs will depend on the technological processes of each of the networks.
Meanwhile, the INCM administrator has indicated that the internet tariffs will continue to be assessed next Tuesday.
