NGO questions Nyusi's presence at CC's 20th anniversary celebrations ahead of election decision

ONG questiona a presença do Nyusi nas celebrações dos 20 anos do CC antes da decisão eleitoral

The Center for Public Integrity (CIP) says that the participation of the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, in the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Council (CC), raises questions and suspicions, given that it is this body's responsibility to validate the results of the election that is being widely contested.

"Filipe Nyusi has remained silent about the protests and demonstrations caused by the suspected manipulation of election results by the party he leads, Frelimo, even in situations that have already led to injuries and deaths. Yet the head of state allows himself to take part in a ceremony organized by the CC," CIP questions.

The CIP believes that it is the duty of the Head of State, at this sensitive and uncertain time, to refrain from taking part in acts such as this, as president of a party that ran in the elections that are being contested.

As far as the CC is concerned, the NGO says that this body should avoid getting involved in situations that put it under suspicion and which could ultimately call into question the fairness of the results it is to announce.

"The fact that there is a great popular contestation of the interim results, and that the CC is the last body that should put an end to the current crisis situation, obliges this body to act in such a way that at the end of the process there can be no suspicion of the decision it will take," reads the NGO document that MZNews had access to.

It should be noted that the President of the Republic (PR), Filipe Nyusi, attended the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Council on November 6th.
