The National Roads Administration (ANE) estimates that 620 million meticais is needed to cover the maintenance costs of the 6,305-kilometer road network in Nampula province..
According to ANE's accounts, 44.5 million meticais of this amount would be earmarked for the maintenance of unpaved roads. According to the source, of the total road network, 4,013 kilometers are classified roads, of which 948.6 kilometers are surfaced and the other 5,365 kilometers are not.
Quoted by AIM, the ANE delegate, Mateus do Espírito Santo, said that he had only 147.2 million meticais available for this year, of which 33.8 million are earmarked for unpaved roads.
"In general, the province's road network has been progressively deteriorating in recent years, especially the unpaved roads. This is due to the limited funding for maintenance," he explained.
According to the source, the system of camps covering unpaved roads on the coast, in the intermediate zone and in the interior of the province will continue this year.
"The camps are located in such a way as to cover a large part of the province's uncovered network. There are eight in total: Memba, Liúpo, Corrane, Mucuali, Chalaua, Imala, Mecubúri and Lalaua," he said.
