The public company, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), has already electrified 52 administrative posts in the northern province of Nampula through the National Electricity Network (REN) and Isolated Systems.
According to EDM, the universe is 70 administrative posts, giving a coverage rate of 75%, ensuring that a total of 18 administrative posts will be covered by 2024.
Speaking about the state of play regarding the expansion of the electricity grid in this part of the country, Cláudio Dambe, director of Electrification and Projects, said that of the administrative posts still to be lit, 12 will be electrified through the National Electricity Grid and six through isolated systems, thus fulfilling the government's plan to connect all administrative posts to electricity by 2024, pursuing the goals of universal access by 2030.
"Nampula province has a total of 70 administrative posts, of which 52 are electrified and 18 are yet to be electrified through the national electricity grid and isolated systems," said Dambe, quoted by AIM.
The government's efforts to electrify the country, through EDM, the Energy Fund (FUNAE) and other partners in the sector, mean that Nampula province currently has an electricity coverage rate of around 43 percent.
According to the source, this year EDM has already started work on the electrification of seven more Administrative Posts, both on-grid and off-grid, in the districts of Mecuburi, Memba, Mogovolas, Muecate and Murrupula, respectively in the Administrative Posts of Muite, Milhana, Lúrio, Muatua, Imala, Luluti and Nihessive.
However, EDM recognizes that there are still challenges in mobilizing resources to finance the remaining eight administrative posts where work has not yet begun.
Even without funds for this purpose, the company plans to start and finish work in 2024, specifically in the districts of Mogovolas, Nacaroa, Angoche, Muecate, Malema, Larde, Memba and Mossuril, successively in the Administrative Posts of Calipo, Intete, Aube, Muculuone, Chuhulo, Mucuali, Mazua and Lunga.
The source also shared that electricity grid expansion projects are underway in Nampula, namely ProEnergia, the first phase of which will end in December 2023, and the second in 2024 and is expected to end in 2026, both in the On-grid component.
