Município de Maputo já investiu 131 milhões para gestão de desastres naturais

The Maputo Municipal Council (CMM) has invested 131 million meticais to implement contingency plans and manage disaster risk, an amount insufficient for the concerns of families, cyclically affected by climatic events.

Among the neighborhoods most affected by floods are Chamanculo, in the area of Xipamanine, Maxaquene, Polana-Canço, Ferroviário, in Minguene, Costa do Sol, Chiango, Hulene, Magoanine and Luís Cabral. These data were shared by the councilor of Health and Social Action in CMM, Alice de Abreu, in the I Seminar on Disaster Risk Management and Reduction.

He recalled that the 2021-2022 rainy season, which lasted until April, affected just over 12,000 people, and actions to mitigate the effects of climate change have been developed as part of the 2019- 2023 Municipal Development Plan.

"Within the Contingency Plan, before the rainy season, we train the local disaster risk management committees, clean and de-silt drainage ditches, and raise awareness among municipalities about the measures to be adopted in case of extreme events," he pointed out.

According to de Abreu, water suction was also carried out in residential areas, schools and health units, in addition to the removal of families at risk.

The Councillor for Health and Social Action pointed out that with the seminar, involving all key actors for disaster risk reduction, among public and private institutions, civil society and the citizen himself, the aim was to survey the main concerns reported during climate events.

"With these experiences, we intend to implement plans so that we have a resilient, structured, and organized city in the face of climate change, which is beginning to have a negative impact on the lives of our citizen," de Abreu said.
