The Municipality of Maputo has owed around 6,360,000 meticais in rent that has not been channeled for more than six months to 106 families who were victims of the Hulene dumpslide in 2018.
Each family receives 10,000 meticais a month to pay their rent, but since October 2023 they haven't received it. Some people have been evicted from the houses they were renting.
The situation has led a group of representatives of these families to riot today in front of the town hall to get an answer as to why the money has not been channeled. They are also demanding the allocation of houses already built in Possulane, in the Marracuene district.
Quoted by STVThe former residents of Hulene have said that if their demands are met, they will never set foot on the Council Steps again.
In fact, the town's mayor, Razaque Manhique, interrupted a meeting to listen to the victims who were demanding their rights.
He assured that there is money to solve the problem and it will be transferred to the families in the next few days. He also said that 65 houses had already been built in Possulane.
"There is money earmarked for this and it should be delivered as soon as possible to those affected. These houses were in the process of being finished. As such, they had to be inspected before we handed them over," he said.
